George Westerman

For more than twenty-five years, George has focused on a single topic: helping leaders to understand the transformative potential of new technologies. As a pioneer in the study of digital transformation, George’s research and writing, including the book Leading Digital, helped to frame the executive conversation on the topic. His earlier research on IT leadership led to the book The Real Business of IT, which is seen as an enduring playbook for transforming IT into a strategic enabler of company performance. His research projects on workforce transformation and digital-ready culture provide important insights for developing continuous innovation capability. His most recent work helps to clarify the complex challenges of leading AI-powered transformation.
George has written three award-winning books and published numerous papers in Harvard Business Review, Sloan Management Review, and other top journals. In addition to his MIT teaching and research, George serves as cochair of the MIT Sloan CIO Leadership Awards, a member of the Digital Strategy Roundtable for the US Library of Congress, and board member for several organizations. He is also a Digital Fellow at the Initiative on the Digital Economy. George works frequently with senior management teams and industry groups around the world. Prior to earning a Doctorate from Harvard Business School, he gained more than a dozen years of experience in product development and technology leadership roles.
