Technologies that Create Prosperity

Innovation is critical to increasing our shared prosperity. Therefore, understanding the computing technologies that underpin innovation -- AI, specialized chips, quantum computers, and even algorithms themselves – allows us to predict and manage these societal impacts for the better. To examine these technologies and what their trends mean for society, we analyze them through the lenses of economics, computer science, and engineering. Our aim is to uncover new insights and answers to big-picture questions like:   How does AI scale and will new systems be economically and environmentally sustainable; what functionality provided by AI will be economically attractive and what does this means for jobs; how are fast computers are getting better (e.g. via algorithmic or semiconductor chip improvements) and can this acceleration be sustained; and what is the potential for new technologies (quantum, specialized chips, etc.) to generate new innovation, and where will these improvements be felt?   Neil Thompson leads this Research Group. Neil
