This research study is closely examining both the technological foundations and business strategy implications of quantum computing.  The project involves two parallel and eventually intersecting streams.  On the technical side, the researchers are analyzing the application of five different quantum algorithms and their potential to drive the technology forward.  On the strategy side, the project examines quantum’s potential impact on companies and the global economy, and how business leaders can best prepare for the practical application of this technology.

Leaders: Neil Thompson & Jonathan Ruane (IDE) and Carl Dukatz & Prashant Shukla (Accenture)

Progress: The researchers are actively examining the first of five algorithms and will have the first of five case studies completed by the end of the year.  The first of two or more articles on quantum and business strategy is slated for publication in January/February.

The purpose of this research project is to understand the current and potential future of data fragmentation and decoupling across China, the EU, and the U.S. with a focus on the issues that firms must address. Key areas for firms to consider include (1) the technical architecture to accommodate multiple geographic data residency requirements, (2) potential change in value creation mechanisms for firms up and down the value chain, and (3) possible business models that will allow for value to be captured and shared within and across regions.

Progress: The researchers anticipate producing their first joint paper together by the end of the year.

The researchers recently conducted the “International Data Space and Accenture Workshop on Data Value.”  During this event, the participants examined key trends related to the research and the challenges they pose for various actors.  These trends included:

• Increase of data/information content in overall product/service value
• Rise of Big Tech and Move to the Cloud
• Geopolitical competition
• Rise of the big state – as a regulator and investor

As organizations experience rapid digital transformation, the effective adoption of AI by stakeholders (employees, partners, and customers), becomes critical for competitive advantage. The IDE research group “Human/AI Interface”  is the home for research projects that examine when humans trust algorithms and how to develop mutual learning between humans and algorithms for optimal decision-making. We explore the symbiosis between human and artificial intelligence, and how the balance varies by task.

Progress: Accenture and the IDE researchers are exploring potential research topics to pursue in this area.  Potential topics include:

• AI Integration in Decision-Making Systems
• How Users Signal Expertise By Their Adoption/Rejection of AI
• Combatting Algorithmic Bias with Nudges.

The organizations that effectively leverage the cloud, while actively engaging predictive analytics and data-driven decision-making, will ultimately reap the greatest success.  At the IDE, our researchers have shown some of the earliest evidence of this reality and continue to build on the nuances with ongoing research.
